SAXIFRAGAS

One of the most notable of families of rock garden plants.
They are mostly alpine and cliff dwellers and quite easy in cultivation.
They prefer rich scree and rock crevices. Shade from hot afternoon sun.


  SILVER AND ENCRUSTED FORMS:
Hard mounds of silvery-grey foliage. May to June. Lime improves encrustation. In general, the flower stems vary from 15-30 cm. unless otherwise noted.

8800 SAXIFRAGA CALLOSA V. LANTOSCANA
A superb garden plant of spidery silver-leaved rosettes. Arching sprays of large white flowers in profusion. Alps. $4.50

8809 S. HOSTII SSP. HOSTII
Large rosettes of linear, recurved and lime-encrusted leaves. Similar to S. crustata, this subspecies forms a mat rather than a cushion, by its numerous offsets. Compact branched panicles carry several white flowers with red spots. Alps. $4.50

8866 S. HOSTII SSP. RHAETICA
This subspecies varies from the preceding one by smaller more slender basal leaves, pointed at the tips. The margins are more finely toothed and it forms more or less a mat rather than a cushion. Overall a more delicate plant. Alps. $4.50

8867 S. LONGIFOLIA H-60-70 cm.
Perfectly symmetrical silver rosettes put out huge pyramidal wands of white blooms.
The beautiful rosettes expand to 20 cm wide before they set forth their exquisite inflorescences. Its numerous leaves are narrow and highly lime-encrusted. Monocarpic in nature, the rosettes take several years to bloom and then die. For best effect plant in a raised bed or a trough. Pyrenees. $6.00

8868 S. ‘MONARCH’ H-60 cm.
An S. cotyledon and possibly S. hostii cultivar of great garden value. Large open rosettes of strap-like shiny green leaves form loose cushions. Sturdy stems support enormous panicles of white flowers. Very vigorous and floriferous, this hybrid just won an Award of Garden Merit at the Silver Sax trials at Wisley. 8877 SAXIFRAGA CESPITOSA H-3-8 cm.
The Tufted Saxifrage as it is otherwise known, is a distinct and pretty plant of bright green rosettes composed of pointed three-lobed leaves. Short racemes support creamy-white flowers. Being one of the parents of the Mossy Hybrids, it is best grown in a shady crevice or a moist gravelly spot of a raised bed. From wild seed collected in Newfoundland where plants were growing on wet mossy rocks in a very inhospitable site. Circumpolar. $5.00

8878 SAXIFRAGA TAYGETEA H-15-20
This delicate and graceful member of the Cotylea Section hails from the high mountains of Greece. It resembles S. rotundifolia. but more refined in form. Leaves are kidney-shaped, glabrous, with up to nine crenations or shallow lobes. They form tight mats of mint-green. Dainty sprays of reddish-purple-spotted, white flowers. Easy in the garden if planted in gravelly, semi-shaded, humus-rich site. From high elevations on Mount Timfi, Northern Greece. $6.00

8859 SAXIFRAGA VEITCHIANA H-15 cm.
Smaller than S. stolonifera, with large green leaves. Numerous red-spotted white flowers with some orange blotching. Plantlets are formed on thread-like runners. Likes part shade. China. $4.00
