A styrofoam container. Cooler type sold at 5 & 10 will
do
One qt. epoxy resin. The liquid catalyst is sold with it
A disposable container in which to mix the epoxy
3 or 4 qts builders sand (fine)
A pair of rubber gloves
1.
TIPS: The epoxy mixture hardens in about 20 minutes
so you can only do two surfaces at one time. Plan to mix up only
a fourth of the resin at one time. The proportions are one part catalyst
to seven parts resin.
Wherever you work, be sure the temperature is above 60 degrees.
Epoxy can burn, so you should wear protective gloves and work in
a well ventilated area.
2.
HOW TO:
Lay out lots of newspaper. You will be spilling a lot of sand.
Mix the first batch of epoxy and liberally cover two adjacent
sides. Thickly spread a layer of sand over both surfaces, pressing
extra hard at the corners.
Mix the next batch of epoxy and repeat. Allow
30 minutes for these 4 sides to harden.
Next, put the container bottom side down and paint the inside
about 3” down, and coat the edges. Put on sand.
Allow the trough to dry overnight. Take brush and gently brush
off the excess sand. Lightly sprinkle epoxy over any bare spots
and cover
with sand.
Drill appropriate number of holes in the bottom and start planting
up those beautiful alpines.
