ABOUT US
 |
Adiantum aleuticum ssp.calderi |
We are a small
specialty nursery involved in growing alpine, rock garden and woodland
plants. We are situated in the foothills of Mount Sutton and Mount Echo
in the picturesque Townships of Quebec, at an altitude of 400 metres
(1300 feet). The nursery is surrounded by natural landscapes of streams,
ponds and woodlands and shares its space with extended display gardens
including scree beds, limestone, tufa, and crevice gardens, woodland
and peat beds, English borders and alpine troughs.
We are Zone 4 USDA
where our summers are short and cooler than our southern and western
neighbors. Very few days reach 30 Celsius. Nights are cool and often
breezy. Winters are long and cold but we can often rely on good snow
coverage. Temperatures in January and February hover at around
minus 20-25C and often hit the minus 30-35C mark. In recent years we
have experienced uncharacteristic weather patterns: droughts in spring
into mid-summer; high humidity levels in summer into fall; and extreme
fluctuation of temperatures in winter, often with periods of rain.
We propagate
by seed, cuttings and divisions. We are constantly striving to fine-tune
and increase the selection of alpines and many other choice dwarf, hardy
plants, in particular Primulas, Saxifrages and dwarf shrubs, for novices
and experts alike.
Our propagating
material is acquired from international seed collectors, colleagues
in the trade, generous friends who are avid plant collectors, and from
our own plant explorations at home and abroad.
Our plants
are grown mostly in 6.5 cm. rose pots. They are plunged in cold frames
or overwinter in an unheated greenhouse where their hardiness is truly
tested.
